As part of the design study, "That's How She Eats" is a printed coffee table book that challenges conventional portrayals of food and female Millennial models in fashion and popular culture imagery. It seeks to represent a greater diversity of body sizes and cultures, reflecting real-life relationships with food. Based on interviews with 10 ethnically diverse female Millennials, the book offers an intimate glimpse into their unique experiences. The academic component of this project earned me the title of Commended Entrant by the Global Undergraduate Awards, the largest international academic awards program, with participants representing 333 universities worldwide.
The core aim of "That's How She Eats" is to dismantle narrow-minded stereotypes that often distort women's relationships with food.
By showcasing the multifaceted roles that food plays in the lives of these women, the book repositions food as a source of empowerment rather than a symbol of societal expectations.
At the heart of the book are in-depth interviews with 10 ethnically diverse female Millennials. These interviews delve into their personal experiences with food, exploring how it influences their lives, identities, and cultural connections. The narratives provide a candid and nuanced view of their relationships with food, challenging prevailing stereotypes.
This book is a comprehensive creation, with all aspects of copywriting, layout design, illustrations, and photography being original works. The photography explores the possible ways that fashion and popular culture images portraying food and female Millennial models can be constructed to represent a greater diversity of body sizes and cultures, and to authentically communicate female Millennials’ relationships with food in real life.
A digital extension of the book was created in the form of a website, offering a snapshot of the interviewed female Millennials' stories. The fun, candid portraitures explore ways that photography can be used to empower the models and authentically communicate their experiences with food.
